Come fare la zucca di Halloween / How to carve an unusual Halloween lantern

There are three more days to Halloween so it's time to go and get our pumpkin. We now have decorative ones in Italy too, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find one but watch out: it's not eadible! These decorative pumpkins seem to last a bit longer than the usual ones, but they will start rotting after some days so don't carve yours too soon!

1. Cut a slice from the bottom part of the pumpkin: the line shows where I've cut mine. You'll empty the pumpkin and insert the candle from there. You can cut it so as to have a better standing pumpkin.
A serious knife will do the job.

2. Empty the pumpkin of pulp and seeds: you can use a teaspoon or an ice cream spoon. It's much easier than you'd think! At the end your pumpkin should look like this:

3. Time to carve it now: I didn't want old evil Jack O'Lantern, I was going for something more romantic instead, like those I had posted a while ago. It's pretty difficult to carve such designs without specific tools (like the one you would use to carve wood or leather), so I had to make something easier but nice anyway.

Home tools I used were:

1. Togli torsolo per le mele
2. cacciavite a stella sottile
3. cacciavite a stella grosso

1. Applecork remover
2. star shaped thin screwdriver
3. star shape thick screwdriver

Before starting, put some signs on the pumpkin as to where the carved motif will go: the pumpkin is roundish and irregular, it would be otherwise difficult to keep a regular motif.

4. Finish carving, put a minicandle and voila! Enjoy your Halloween pumpkin lantern!

Let me temporarily put aside my articles on Christmas and share some ideas on a much nearer festivity: Halloween! I have to say I've never liked that since I got back from school terrified by my schoolmates horror tales! But still, I am a party person so here are a few ideas on how to organize a party for grown ups!

Decoration project no.1: see what can come out of a chicken's net. Not easy at all, but stunning.

Idea no.2, sadly only for garden-owning people!

Per la cena, cominciamo con gli antipasti:

Let's start now planning entreés for dinner:

American taste likes to mix sweet 'n' salty, so here are some broomsticks with salty breadsticks and a chocolate lower part. You can of course make them entirely sweet by baking stick-shaped cookies.

Buffissimi, i wurstel mummificati!

Mummy hot-dogs look so funny and superasy!

Too bad the picture is so small: dragon eggs are my favourite! Boil eggs, crack the shell but don't take it off. Sprinkle with food colouring and, according to what I can get from the picture, wash them in vinegar to fix the colour. Once you take the shell off, you'll see the dragon effect!

Pumpkin soup now, in a pumpkin!

That's all for now, I'll write more later on with some other ideas for the menu and home decor. What about your Hallowe'en parties?

Some time ago I've found this picture on Pinterest:

I love onion rings, and this mouth-watering picture with related recipe had me on the go in a second! Btw, the recipe is easily adapted for gluten-free needs and it skips the frying bit, which makes it much lighter.

I revisited the recipe a little bit as follows:
- I didn't use red onions, but golden ones, due to a shopping misunderstanding between The Mighty Pi and me.
- I cut them in very thin circles
- I've soaked them in water instead of milk as the recipe says. My mom says it's the same, and I didn't have any milk!

- as from the recipe, I then dipped the rings in a mixture of gluten-free breadcrumbs, crackers (I used rosemary flavoured ones which tasted so good) and parmesan cheese.
- I've put them in the oven, sadly skipping the oil spray sprinking because we seem to have no spray oil here in Italy.

By now, such a good smell starts to fill the kitchen: time to make the couch and a movie ready.. and enjoy your snack!

ps: take a look at Riches to Rags, the blog the recipe comes from: it's worth a visit!

Musica per correre / Music for running

I've always thought no-one would ever go running without some good music to listen to, but I had to change my mind when I noticed how many people go running without headphones. I don't know yet if the reason behind this choice is to achieve a better workout session, or if it's just a personal choice.. but I actually tried both and:

1. Music can help you focus on something else, if running is really boring for you. It can energize or relax you according to what you need and to the music you choose. Running can also be a nice moment to listen to all that music you download  store and never listen to.

2. Running in silence helps you focus on your workout. You rely more on your pace and breath, and I think it helps you enjoy the whole experience - at least if you go running in nature as I do.

Buona corsa a tutti, e fatemi sapere!

I am still convinced it's just a question of personal taste, and I suggest you try both. So I leave you with some of my recent workout music, and with an inspiration for silent running. Happy running, and let me know what you liked best!

This is the time of the year when I start storing handmande, cheap Christmas gifts.Money lack is not the only reason behind this choice: Christmas these past years looks far to business-y for me, and making something by hand and with love helps me enjoy the season much more.
This is why I've decided I will dedicate a weekly post to this topic, sharing with you ideas I spot here and there, to help us all make funny and creative little Christmas pressies.

Il primo della serie è questo:

Here is the first proposal:

These are crocheted owl-shaped pouches. I can't crochet and I thought of knitting them, then I decided this was my good chance to learn crocheting: I will keep you posted so more non-crocheters will have a try at these!

After a quick consulting session with my mom, I decided to create the rectangular background shape using single stitches instead of double/triple as from the picture: this way the pouche will be more resistant. This is why I've found this great video tutorial, which I enjoy sharing with you!

Qualcuno si butterà con me nell'impresa? Avete consigli?

Anyone trying the masterpiece with me? Anything I should know?

I have been so busy, but that was also a reason to celebrate! Here is my tree-themed cake, which I created to celebrate a  successful moment in my job-life: the tree is in my logo, so I wanted it on the cake.. and I made a golden one so as to wish us wealth!

I actually had a mint-frosting topped cake in mind, with a chocolate chips decoration, but I sadly found out mint frosting is not so popular in Italian supermarkets so I used the cheesecake cream layer as a background plus golden sugar grains for the tree. I like the tree, it was actually handmade by The Mighty Pì...cough cough..!!

Should anyone want to try my cheesecake, here is what I do:
- bottom layer with  gluten free cookies mixed with palm oil and honey (might sounds disgusting, but I promise I've read it somewhere). If you have very energetic kids, have them smash the cookies for you: you'll get smashed cookies&relaxed children at the same time.
- for the creamy layer: mix chocolate cheese with white cheese.

You make the bottom layer first, then fix the creamy layer. Some people like it with less cream and more cookies, some prefer the opposite. If you have better recipes for a cheesecake I'll be very happy to try them.. in the meantime this one is quick and idiot-proof.

E voi con che cibi festeggiate?

And you, which is your food for celebrating?
